WAEC Confirms Technical Glitches in 2025 WASSCE Results, Shuts Down Portal Temporarily - The Alternative News

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has confirmed the presence of technical glitches in the recently released 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, affecting four major subjects: Mathematics, English Language, Biology, and Economics.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Acting Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, Moyosola Adesina, disclosed that the issues emerged during a post-release audit of the results, prompting the Council to temporarily shut down its result checker portal.

“WAEC sincerely regrets to inform the general public of technical issues discovered during the internal review of the recently released results of the WASSCE for School Candidates (SC) 2025,” the statement read.

WAEC attributed the glitches to a newly introduced anti-examination malpractice measure known as paper serialisation, which was applied to the affected subjects.

“As part of our efforts to curb examination malpractice, the Council embarked on an innovation, paper serialisation, already deployed by another national examination body. This was carried out in Mathematics, English Language, Biology, and Economics,” Adesina explained.

The Council noted that while the innovation aligns with global best practices in examination security, it inadvertently led to “technical bugs” that distorted candidates’ scores in the impacted subjects.

“An internal post-result release procedure revealed some technical bugs in the results,” she added.

In response, WAEC has temporarily disabled access to the 2025 WASSCE results on its online portal to facilitate an urgent review and correction process.

“The Council, being a responsive body sensitive to fairness and professionalism, has decided to urgently review and correct the technical glitches. As a result, access to the WASSCE (SC) 2025 results has been temporarily denied on the result checker portal,” the statement noted.

The examination body assured candidates, parents, and stakeholders that the issues are being addressed with urgency and transparency, and promised to rectify the anomalies within 24 hours.

“We extend our deep and sincere apologies to all affected candidates and the general public. We appreciate their patience and understanding as we work diligently to resolve this matter with transparency and urgency within the next twenty-four (24) hours,” the statement continued.

WAEC also advised candidates who had previously checked their results to recheck them after 24 hours for updated and corrected information.

Reaffirming its commitment to integrity and excellence, the Council concluded:

“WAEC remains committed to upholding excellence, fairness and transparency in all our assessment processes. Thank you for always counting on our integrity and reposing confidence in us to render quality service to the Nigerian child.”
