Court Adjourns Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Cybercrime Trial to November 24 - The Alternative News

The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned the trial of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan on alleged cybercrime charges to November 24, 2025.

The case, presided over by Justice Mohammed Umar, was earlier scheduled to commence on Monday but could not proceed due to the protest led by activist Omoyele Sowore, demanding the release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu. Court operations were suspended as a result of the demonstration.

When activities resumed on Tuesday, the judge fixed November 24 for the continuation of proceedings.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, was arraigned on June 30 on a six-count charge filed by the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation (DPPF), Mohammed Abubakar, under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) (Amendment) Act, 2024.

During the last hearing on September 22, the trial was stalled after her counsel, Ehiogie West-Idahosa, SAN, raised a preliminary objection challenging the court’s jurisdiction and alleging abuse of prosecutorial powers by the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF).

Justice Umar ruled that the objection must first be resolved before the trial proceeds.

Akpoti-Uduaghan is accused of transmitting false and injurious information via electronic means with intent to malign and endanger lives. The prosecution alleges she accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello of plotting to kill her during a public gathering in Ihima, Kogi State, and later repeated the claims in a television interview.

The senator has since been granted bail, pending further hearing.
