A National Commissioner at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, has assumed duty as the Acting Chairman of the electoral body.

Her appointment follows the formal handover of responsibilities by the outgoing Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who is proceeding on terminal leave ahead of the completion of his tenure.

The development was officially announced on Tuesday at the INEC headquarters in Abuja during a stakeholders’ meeting involving Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) and senior officials of the Commission.

Agbamuche-Mbu, who represents Cross River State on the Commission, will oversee the affairs of INEC in an acting capacity pending further directives from the Presidency.

Professor Yakubu, appointed in 2015 and reappointed in 2020, is widely regarded for overseeing two general elections, 2019 and 2023, as well as several off-cycle polls across the country.
