Tension gripped Idogun community in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State on Friday after irate youths allegedly assaulted the town’s monarch, Oba Moses Bakare, his wife, and his son during the annual New Yam festival.
Witnesses said the traditional ruler sustained injuries in the attack, while his wife was reportedly beaten and stripped half-naked before security operatives intervened to restore order.
The cause of the incident remains unclear, but a community source disclosed that the monarch had been at loggerheads with some residents for a while.
“The angry youths really assaulted the monarch, his wife, and his son. We don’t know what caused it, but we know that some youths in the community don’t like the Oba. If not for the swift intervention of security operatives, the situation would have degenerated into a full-blown crisis,” the source said.
Confirming the attack, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Olayinka Ayanlade, said the matter was under investigation.
“The case is under investigation and we are leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that justice is served,” the PPRO stated.
The assault has sparked tension in the community, with residents expressing concern that the conflict could escalate if not quickly addressed.
