Nigeria Withdraws Fighter Jets After Benin Coup Attempt Is Contained - The Alternative News

Nigeria has withdrawn the fighter aircraft earlier deployed to the Benin Republic after authorities confirmed that the situation in the neighbouring country had stabilized following Sunday’s attempted military coup.

The jets, dispatched from Lagos for surveillance and regional security monitoring, were ordered back to base on Sunday afternoon after intelligence indicated that loyalist forces in Benin had regained full control and that there was no immediate threat to Nigeria’s borders.

The attempted coup targeted the government of President Patrice Talon. Mutineers dressed in military uniforms launched an early-morning operation, initially attacking the presidential residence in Cotonou. Their assault failed, prompting them to seize the state-run ORTB broadcaster, taking over the national transmission signal.

Benin’s National Guard and loyal military units responded quickly, surrounding the station, isolating the rebels, and securing key government locations. Local reports indicated that the mutineers remained barricaded inside ORTB as of Sunday night, with negotiations ongoing to secure their peaceful surrender.

President Talon was reported safe at an undisclosed location, though he had not yet made a public address.

Despite the chaos, there were no reports of widespread violence or major casualties. Cotonou remained tense but largely calm following the swift containment of the mutiny.

The Beninese government is expected to issue a full statement, including details on the identities of the mutineers and the motives behind the attempted coup.
