A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has ordered the remand of a 37-year-old nurse, Kehinde Adesanya, at the Ibara Correctional Centre over alleged conspiracy, attempted abortion, and murder.
Adesanya is facing a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, attempt to procure abortion, and murder.
The police prosecutor, Solomon Babalola, filed an ex parte motion seeking the remand of the defendant for an initial period of 60 days, pending legal advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
According to the prosecutor, the alleged offences were committed between January and March in the Ikereku area of Laderin, Abeokuta. He told the court that the defendant conspired with others still at large to procure an abortion for one Victoria Ariyo, a 23-year-old corps member serving in Abeokuta.
Ariyo reportedly died from suspected complications arising from the procedure and was buried last week.
Babalola further alleged that Adesanya supplied drugs to the deceased in a bid to terminate the pregnancy, adding that the drugs led to her death.
The prosecutor noted that the offences contravene Sections 516, 230, 324, and 319 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs O.O. Sam-Obaleye, granted the application and ordered the remand of the defendant at the Ibara Correctional Centre pending legal advice from the DPP. The case was adjourned until May 26 for mention.
Earlier, on Monday, one Abass Olalekan, an official of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), who was accused of impregnating the deceased, had been arraigned and granted bail.
