President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated veteran actor, filmmaker and academic Kola Oyewo on his 80th birthday, describing him as a “national treasure” and a worthy ambassador of Yoruba theatre.

In a statement shared on Saturday via the Presidency’s official X handle, Tinubu commended Oyewo’s immense contributions to Nigeria’s cultural and creative industries, noting that his work has significantly shaped the country’s storytelling tradition.

The President highlighted Oyewo’s impact across theatre, film and academia, particularly during his years as a lecturer at Obafemi Awolowo University, where he influenced generations of performers and scholars.

“Oyewo is a veteran thespian and a distinguished cultural icon whose enduring contributions to the growth of Nigeria’s theatre, film, and cultural productions have left an indelible mark on generations of artistes and scholars,” Tinubu said.

He also acknowledged the octogenarian’s role in preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage through his work on stage, screen and in the classroom, describing his career as one defined by discipline, excellence and dedication.

Tinubu further emphasised the importance of the arts in national development, noting that Oyewo’s career reflects the power of creative expression in advancing education, national identity and social cohesion.

He wished the veteran actor continued good health, peace and fulfilment, expressing confidence that his legacy would remain a source of inspiration for future generations.
