The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for the resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, citing alleged bias in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Addressing journalists in Abuja on Thursday, former Senate President David Mark said the party had lost confidence in the electoral body following its decision to derecognise the ADC leadership.
Mark accused INEC of partisanship, insisting that the commission’s leadership could no longer be trusted to conduct credible elections, particularly ahead of the 2027 general polls.
“We demand the immediate resignation or sack of the INEC Chairman… We are convinced that they are incapable of conducting any credible election,” he stated.
The ADC maintained that it would continue its internal activities despite INEC’s stance, arguing that the law does not mandate the commission’s presence for party programmes once due notice has been given.
Mark also appealed to the international community to take note of what he described as a growing threat to Nigeria’s democracy, urging accountability for actions that could undermine the electoral process.
He further called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and actively defend democratic institutions, warning against any attempt to impose a one-party system in the country.
