Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have killed several Nigerian soldiers, including a senior army officer, following a fresh attack on a military base in Borno State.
The assault, which occurred late Wednesday night, targeted a Joint Task Force formation in Benisheikh, Kaga Local Government Area. The town lies along the busy Damaturu Road, a corridor frequently attacked by insurgents.
Sources within the military said the attackers, believed to be members of the Islamic State-backed faction of Boko Haram (ISWAP), launched the assault using explosives and sustained gunfire.
The attack reportedly lasted for several hours, causing panic within the military camp and nearby communities.
Although the exact number of casualties has yet to be officially confirmed, multiple sources indicated that losses were significant.
Among those reportedly killed was Brigadier-General O.O. Braimah, said to be the commander of the 29 Brigade stationed in the area. His death is considered a major setback to military operations in the axis.
“He was killed last night along with the brigade’s Imam, several officers and soldiers. The attack lasted for hours. It is very unfortunate,” a military source told SaharaReporters.
Another source confirmed the development, identifying the deceased senior officer as the 29 Brigade Commander in Benisheikh.
Several soldiers were also said to have sustained injuries, while others remain unaccounted for as search and rescue operations continue.
Military authorities have not issued an official statement on the incident.
