Nigeria’s U-20 women’s national team, the Falconets, have secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup despite a 2-1 defeat to Malawi in the second leg of their final qualifying fixture.
The decisive encounter, played at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, saw the Falconets progress 3-2 on aggregate over Malawi’s Young Scorchers.
Nigeria advanced courtesy of their first-leg advantage, having earlier secured a 2-0 victory in Ikenne, Ogun State, which proved crucial in overcoming a determined Malawian side.
Malawi took an early lead in the ninth minute through Faith Chimzimu, boosting the hosts’ hopes of a comeback. Nigeria responded with attacking intent, as Kindness Ifeanyi delivered a dangerous cross that was met by Favour Nkwocha, whose effort struck the woodwork.
Chimzimu doubled Malawi’s lead in the 56th minute to level the aggregate score temporarily, piling pressure on the Nigerian side. However, the Falconets responded swiftly, with substitute Precious Oscar scoring in the 62nd minute to restore Nigeria’s aggregate advantage.
The goal ultimately sealed Nigeria’s passage to the global tournament, demonstrating the team’s resilience and composure in a challenging away fixture.
The Falconets’ qualification further reinforces their strong pedigree in women’s youth football, maintaining their status as one of Africa’s most successful teams at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup level.
Nigeria reached the final qualifying round after defeating Rwanda 5-0 on aggregate and Senegal 3-1 on aggregate.
The tournament is scheduled to take place in Poland from September 5 to September 26, 2026.
