FG Declares Public Holidays For Eid-el-Kabir, Tightens Security Nationwide - The Alternative News

The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid al-Adha celebration.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Magdalene Ajani, in Abuja.

The government said the declaration reflects its respect for the faith and spiritual heritage of millions of Nigerian Muslims joining others worldwide in observing the sacred festival.

Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslim faithful at home and in the diaspora, describing Eid-el-Kabir as a period that symbolises sacrifice, obedience to God, and compassion for humanity. He urged Nigerians to use the occasion for prayers and reflection, particularly for the country’s peace, unity, and prosperity.

Meanwhile, the Operation Hadin Kai has announced heightened security measures across the North-East to ensure a peaceful celebration.

In a statement by its Media Information Officer, Sani Uba, the command disclosed that proactive steps have been taken following intelligence reports suggesting possible attempts by remnants of Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province to carry out isolated attacks during the festive period.

Authorities assured residents that security forces are fully prepared to safeguard lives and property, urging citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies.

The development underscores ongoing efforts to maintain security across the country, especially during major religious celebrations that often witness increased movement of people.
