DHQ Confirms Death of Retired General Rabe Abubakar in Bandits’ Captivity - The Alternative News

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died while in the custody of bandits in Katsina State.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Director of Defence Information, Samaila Uba, said the Armed Forces made extensive efforts to rescue the retired officer, but the attempts were ultimately unsuccessful.

Uba conveyed the condolences of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) to Abubakar’s family, colleagues and the nation, describing the late general as a dedicated officer who served with distinction.

The DHQ noted that Abubakar held several key positions during his military career, including Director of Defence Information, and made significant contributions to counter-insurgency operations and the professional development of the armed forces.

According to the statement, the military deliberately refrained from making his abduction public earlier to avoid jeopardising ongoing rescue efforts by security agencies.

The DHQ added that his death has further strengthened the resolve of the military to intensify operations against bandits, terrorists and other criminal elements across the country.

“We will remain resolute in defending the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Nigeria and protecting all citizens,” the statement read, while assuring that those responsible for acts of terrorism and abductions would be brought to justice.

The late general was abducted on May 30, 2026, alongside his wife, Hajiya Amina Abubakar, near Zakin Baure village in the Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State while travelling in a Peugeot 406.

His death has drawn renewed attention to the persistent security challenges in parts of northern Nigeria.
