FEC Approves NYSC Reforms, Introduces 11 Specialised Streams for Corps Members - The Alternative News



The  Federal Executive Council  has approved wide-ranging reforms for the  (NYSC) aimed at enhancing the scheme’s efficiency and relevance.

The Minister of Youth Development, disclosed this on Monday after the weekly FEC meeting.

Olawande stated that while the one-year duration of the scheme has been retained, the council approved seven key reforms. These include the digitalisation of NYSC operations, a transition in leadership structure from military to civilian control, and the introduction of a redesigned NYSC uniform.

Also speaking on the development, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Coordination, , said the NYSC orientation programme would now be restructured into three distinct phases.

According to her, the new structure is designed to better prepare corps members for national service and future career opportunities.

She explained that the first two weeks of the orientation would focus on civic responsibility, national values, leadership development, and nation-building.

The second phase, she added, would centre on career mapping, financial literacy, entrepreneurship, business planning, and access to finance.

Usman further disclosed that the final two weeks would involve specialised training aligned with corps members’ chosen career paths.

Under the new framework, every corps member will select one of 11 newly introduced specialised streams during registration, through which they will receive targeted and practical training to improve employability.

The specialised streams include:

Agric Corps
Medical Corps
Education Corps
Tech and Digital Corps
Legal Corps
Public Service Corps
Infrastructure Corps
Green Corps
Enterprise Corps
Creative Economy Corps
Paramilitary and Security Corps

Usman noted that the initiative is designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and labour market demands.

She added that the reforms would equip graduates with practical, career-focused skills tailored to their educational background, professional interests and Nigeria’s evolving economic needs.
