LP Chieftain Urges Tinubu, Atiku to Step Aside for Younger Leaders in 2027 - The Alternative News

A chieftain of the Labour Party (LP) and former National Assembly candidate, Ezeh Emmanuel Ezeh, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race and pave the way for younger political leaders.

Ezeh made the appeal on Sunday during a media briefing in Abuja, stressing the need for a generational transition in Nigeria’s political leadership.

“Both President Tinubu and Alhaji Atiku belong to the old generation of Nigerian politics,” Ezeh said. “The time has come for these two old war horses to call it a day in electoral contests.”

The LP stalwart urged both leaders to play the role of elder statesmen by mentoring and supporting emerging young candidates. He warned that their continued participation in presidential elections could further inflame regional tensions and undermine national cohesion.

Ezeh also revisited his earlier call for President Tinubu to prioritize the conduct of a free, fair, and credible general election in 2027 rather than seeking re-election. He expressed concern over reports that Tinubu is allegedly courting incumbent governors, particularly from the South, to back his second-term bid.

“Tinubu’s rumoured interest in a second term is already overheating the political space,” he said.

On former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Ezeh criticized his alleged plans to contest under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), warning that such a move could fracture the opposition.

“Atiku is busy creating the impression in the North that the coalition is all about his presidential ambition. Two years to the election, Nigeria is already divided along regional lines. This is not a good omen for our country,” he added.

Ezeh’s remarks reflect growing calls within Nigeria’s political circles for a generational shift ahead of the 2027 elections.
