The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its ongoing two-week warning strike following overnight deliberations by its National Executive Council (NEC).
ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, announced the decision on Wednesday during a press briefing in Abuja. He said the NEC meeting, which started on Tuesday and ended around 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday, resolved to suspend the strike after assessing progress made in talks with the federal government.
According to Piwuna, the suspension was a gesture of goodwill in recognition of efforts by students, parents, and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), who intervened to facilitate dialogue between the union and government officials.
“We’ve had useful engagements with representatives of the government to consider the response to the draft renegotiation of the 2009 agreements. While noting that more work still needs to be done, NEC concluded that the ongoing strike should be reviewed,” he stated.
ASUU had embarked on the two-week warning strike on Monday, October 13, over the government’s delay in addressing its longstanding demands.
The union’s key demands include the conclusion of the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement, payment of withheld salaries and arrears, revitalisation of public universities, and an end to the alleged victimisation of lecturers in certain institutions.
Piwuna, however, warned that the union would not hesitate to resume industrial action if the government fails to honour its commitments.
