Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signalling a major realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Abubakar confirmed the move in a post shared on X earlier today, where he posted photos of himself receiving his ADC membership card and holding up a customised “Waziri 01” jersey. The registration ceremony took place in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, and drew a large crowd of supporters, party officials, and community leaders.
In the photos, the former vice president is seen raising his membership form triumphantly as supporters captured the moment on their phones.
“It’s official. – AA,” he wrote, putting an end to months of speculation surrounding his political future.
Political insiders had earlier hinted that Abubakar would formalise his ADC membership during his birthday visit to Adamawa, which also included several community outreach engagements.
His defection follows his departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in early 2025, ending a long-standing association with the party where he had been one of its most influential figures.
With this move, Abubakar is expected to rally support and build a formidable opposition bloc against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 polls.
